Mildred “Millie” Whitney, 88, passed away in her Scottsdale home with family by her side on February 18, 2010. She was born July 6, 1921 in Cumberland Iowa, the daughter of Anton and Elsa Ortgies. Hearts weigh heavy on her six children and their spouses, Hedy and Norm Pierce, Jean Moberly, Earl and Cheri Whitney, Doug and Diane Whitney, Kris and Jack Ahern, Toni Whitney and Cesar Avalos; her 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She always loved to be around kids and taught school in Iowa for many years. Millie endured serious struggles and family differences early in life, including the death of her sister Donna Mae in 1955. She always came away stronger and wiser, learning something new and passing it on. She met the love of her life, Leon Earl Whitney and they wed on May 24, 1941. She lived a happy and blessed life with Earl and their six kids in Illinois for many years. After 29 years of marriage, her beloved husband passed away in 1970. She enjoyed her vacations to Arizona so much that she made the move to Scottsdale in 1974. She worked as a caregiver in a nursing home and at Angels/Ole’s Home Center in Scottsdale for many years. Millie had a great sense of humor, a lot of friends and a lot of love to give. She never turned her back on anyone and was always willing to help. She will be greatly missed, always remembered and forever loved. Our world is a better place because she was here. In Millie’s words “This too shall pass”. Private Family Services are being held. Memorial contributions may be made to Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL & SPCA) (602) 273-6852 ext. 106.
