Joseph Caputo, 94, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010, in Scottsdale. Born August 13, 1915, in Chicago, IL, Joe was the son of Joseph and Rose Caputo and graduated from Crane Technical High School in 1933. Joe knew what it meant to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps. After his father, a Chicago restaurateur, lost his business in the Great Depression, Joe had to give up his dream of studying engineering at the University of Illinois. He found a job as a laborer for the Works Progress Administration, and later was employed as a construction worker for the Owens-Illinois Bottling Company in Chicago. After Owens-Illinois was bought by the Continental Can Company, Joe learned the machinist's trade, and continued in that capacity for many years. He rose to become a shop foreman, a customer-service representative, and a technical adviser for canning and bottling firms in Germany and Hong Kong. He retired from Continental Can as a plant manager in 1982 but continued as a consultant for Continental for three more years. Joe relaxed from work by working more, as a master carpenter. Joe wed Marie Yolanda Napolitano in 1939. The couple remained married and deeply devoted to each other for 62 years, until Marie's death, in 2001. Two years later, Joe moved to Scottsdale, where he enjoyed the climate, golf, poker, Bombay martinis, and above all, the loving company of his companion, Ally Addington of Scottsdale. Joe is survived by his son, Philip (Leslie Ware), and daughter, Patricia (Harold Esralew), five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
