Jimmie D. James, 73 of Cave Creek, AZ, formerly of Pleasant Hill, Missouri passed away February 26, 2010 in Scottsdale, AZ. Jimmie was born March 29, 1936 in Miami, Oklahoma the son of Paul A. and Opal L. Smith-James. He graduated from Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas in 1954 enlisting in the US Army the same year. He was selected for the “Army Security Agency” Training Center in Ft. Devon’s, Mass., and was then assigned to the Two Rock Ranch Station in Petaluma, California specializing in “Cryptology”. He was Honorably Discharged June 1956. In 1961, Jimmie applied to “The University of Kansas City” (now known as UMKC) School of Law, earned his B.A. and Juris Doctor Degree, and admitted to the Bar in 1964. He was a member of the American Bar Assn., Assn. of Trial Lawyers of America, Missouri Bar Assn., Missouri Assn. of Trial Attorneys, Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Assn., and the Eastern Jackson County Bar Assn. Jimmie was certified as a Mediator in General Civil litigation and admitted to practice in all courts in the State of Missouri, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Jimmie was utmost a true trial attorney, he loved nothing more than preparing for and trying cases in the courtroom. In 2001, Jimmie closed his Law office and along with his wife (Jo Ann) retired to Phoenix, Arizona. Not one to lead the “retirement” life Jimmie obtained an Associate in Applied Science–Chemical Dependency Counseling degree. He passed the ICRC/AODA Substance Abuse Counselor Examination administered by the Arizona Board for the Certification of Addiction Counselors (ABCAC) on March 13, 2004. He was currently employed full time at “Southwest Behavioral Health”. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Paul, and sister, Laurmel Buergey of Beaufort, South Carolina who recently passed away on February 24, 2010. He is survived by wife, Jo Ann Smith-James of Cave Creek, AZ, daughters Jennifer Messner (Stacy) of Blue Springs, Missouri and Jami Longwith (Rich) of Kansas City, Missouri and Step-daughter Allison R. Holmes of Independence, Missouri. Six grandchildren, Carson, Carter and Colton Messner and Truman and Reagan Longwith and Julia Poe. Jimmie was a “Friend of Bill” for the past 9 years. Memorial Services will be Wednesday, March 10 at 2:00 pm at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E Indian School Road, Scottsdale, AZ.
